FOIA Update
June 5, 2024

WASHINGTON – Empower Oversight continues to increase the pressure on the Justice Department and push for details about the department’s management of the personnel who are handling of the lawsuits involving Hunter Biden.

In April, Empower Oversight expressed concern that in the Department’s prosecution of Hunter Biden in Delaware and California, as well as in Mr. Biden’s own lawsuit against the IRS, Department officials on whom SSA Shapley and SA Ziegler blew the whistle were still in charge of litigation that provides further opportunity to retaliate against the whistleblowers. Tristan Leavitt, president of Empower Oversight, wrote in the letter that the Justice Department officials seemed determined to ignore the tax whistleblower protections Shapley and his attorneys relied on.

In light of the “Department’s bizarre behavior in handling these cases,” in an attempt to better understand the department’s actions in these legal cases, Empower Oversight is requesting additional information and correspondence between Hunter Biden’s counsel and the Justice Department as well as communications within the department following the April 4, 2024, letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland.
